Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings made by the official, echoing the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
