The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
